Thanks for the comment Gary. If the unit was built soley as a carbon filter it is mainly going to remove smells and tastes from the water. They usually don’t have any means for sediment removal. I’m assuming the sediment is not chunks of carbon from the filter itself but is silt coming from the incoming water supply. If that is the case, a 20″ tall 5 micron whole house filter may be needed.

If the homeowners can hear the unit running, it’s most likely still backwashing. The carbon will wear out and need replacement but it should last much longer than one year. My first guess would be that it’s working but they need an upstream sediment filter. Let me know how it works out and if I can be of any further help.

Hello,
I was very impressed with your article. I am a General Contractor in San Diego and I bought a Fleck 5600 whole house carbon filter for a client as a gift. My plumber installed it less than 1 year ago. My client is getting sediment in their drinking glasses and I have not been able to locate anyone who provides service for them. We our wondering if it is not back-washing now or what we can do. Do you have any suggestions or comments that could help me help them? Thank you.
